How to turn being laid off into a prime opportunity for the future, today
Have you just been “let go” too?
There is almost no way to soften the blow of the reality of a pink slip. But even before the sting disappears, do allow me to interject a rather old response that we could choose to make true: “This may be a blessing in disguise.”
You and I are not the only ones to feel stunned and a little shaken. Many of our colleagues and friends may be getting or have already gotten the same news. All the more reason to find your way through this challenge–so you can position yourself to help and support others through this time!
I have worked hard on taking this news as a chance to respond to a new opportunity rather than react to a depressing reality.
So where to from here? Do you have a computer at home? How many resumes have you sent where? Do you have something you know that others don’t? Isn’t there anything else to do?
Today is the perfect day to start to recreate yourself. Perhaps this time is your sabbatical and one, most likely, very well earned. So here you are at a place you may have secretly been wishing for…time to think, breathe and re-discover what it is that you really want to do. And not just what your corporation or job was needing from you. Being laid off may end up being the best thing that happened recently. No doubt there are significant challenges. But given this is the current state of affairs, what you do with it is up to you. This is YOUR time to plan, think, reflect and decide who you really are. Perhaps even find new passions in life.
BUT you will probably say, as I did, “But the bills still need to be paid.” Food needs to make its way to the table. All the more reason to have two core focus’ going on in your life now. These have to do with the two “principles” of our existence: the dynamics of identity maintenance and of growth and development. To be fulfilled as a human being, these two things must be ongoing in our lives both physically/physiologically (of the body) and mentally/spiritually (of the mind).
So you already have two things to focus on each day that will ensure all your needs are being met: the care for and cultivation of your identity both physiologically and mentally and your health and development —mind and body.
But how to turn optimism into cold hard cash ? This is the pivotal issue. What are the steps to take to make this happen?
I would be delighted and honored to share this journey with you. But be prepared for some unexpected moments! Let’s start by not-starting. By reflecting. By preparing your heart and mind for taking some new twists and turns. After all, doing EVERYTHING the same as you have done thus far is NOT going to effect change in your life, and change is needed. Right?
These first no-steps may be more helpful that you might at first think. They will, however, enable some foundational exploration that really prepares you for the next steps. After all, you don’t sow seeds on old ground. You need to till the soil a little.
Preparing your mind and body
Before coming back for the beginning of the Eight Steps to a Solid Home-Based Business that will begin right here TODAY, I have two writing-reflecting exercises. The writing is just for you. Not for me. This is no test. This is for you to explore and better “know thyself.” Writing it down is essential for you to begin to clarify your own thinking. And clear thinking is essential to significant outcomes. That is something no-one else can do for you. No computer system can do for you. This is your work.
Once the 8 Steps start, you will get access to tips, free videos, links to important resources and more that will start you, if you want, on a path to financial freedom in the post-modern, and perhaps for you, post-corporate world!
These 8 Steps are not miraculous. BUT they work. The 8 Steps are buidt around principles that enable you to achieve your desired goal. But you have to have the goals. You have to choose your destination. You are the master of your ship. That’s why we begin with the process of clarifying your goals and priorities.
Are you ready?
All you have to do is take small steps. Just make sure they are ones that take you forward. Small is beautiful!
This is not for everyone. But for those with an adventurous spirit, ready to dream (again) and then build your new dreams, pick up you pen and paper and read on. Just a little more.
Reflection as a Foundation
Before you start the 8 Steps, take some time to ponder these two questions:
1. Self disclosure: Know thyself: What was I really like before? (before being “liberated” from my previous job.)
What were my beliefs, values standards? What were the worst parts? What were the best parts?
2. A compelling vision for myself/my family: How would I describe myself in my ideal state? What would I be doing and being? What would it feel like?
Dream a little. Dreams don’t kill. But not having them means we quietly die inside.
Feel the tension between these two AND ponder the shift that takes place in your mind and body as you consider these two very different aspects of yourself. Re-creation is a creative human act. It begins by engaging our heart and mind. It is not something that starts outside, though that’s where the greatest changes will be felt in the end.
…and get yourself ready to make this time in your life the very best yet!
So what next? How many of us have quickly shed our love for the corporate workspace? But how do we adapt ourselves, learn new skills so we can turn the remarkable potential of this new sphere into a genuinely productive work place and new halls of commerce?
